SDPD K9 Stabbed by Assault Suspect

A spokesperson for the San Diego Police Department has confirmed that a member of the K9 unit was stabbed during the arrest of a suspect.

The incident happened in mid-February, according to department officials, and it began when a woman called the SDPD to indicate she was having problems with her adult son. When they arrived, they found broken glass and the suspect with a knife.

Officers told him to drop the weapon—when he refused, officers opened fire with bean bag rounds. Police then chose to deploy the K9. The dog bit the man on his arm, officers said, at which point the man used the knife to stab the dog.

The dog underwent emergency surgery and is expected to recover. The suspect was taken into custody. It’s expected he’ll be charged with assaulting a police dog, in addition to other crimes.

Since the arrest took place in Escondido, it’s believed the suspect was taken to the Vista Jail to be booked.
