Handcuffed Inmate Escapes SD Jail, Makes A Run for It, Jumps in the Bay

A SDPD arrestee who escaped from the San Diego Central Jail was caught, police say, but not before he ran off and jumped into the bay.

The incident happened over ComiCon weekend after officers arrested Jaquin Castro on suspicion of domestic battery.  Investigators said they received a call from a woman who said that Castro had broken into her home and attacked her.

The suspect barricaded himself in a garage shortly after officer arrived, but they were eventually able to arrest him.

Police haven’t said how Castro managed to escape from the downtown jail, but they did confirm they were able to capture him after he got tired of swimming.

Witnesses say they saw the man jump into the San Diego Bay just south of the USS Midway Museum.

Castro has since been released from custody. It’s unclear if he succeeded in posting San Diego bail bonds or if he was released on his own recognizance after he appeared in court.
